| Q&A:
Larissa, Lisa, and
Alexandria Olick |
|
|
| How
long did your screenplay
take to write, from conception
to final completion? |
| It
took about two months to
write, and then one month
to polish. |
|
| Where
did your inspiration come
from? |
| We
wanted to write a lower
budget script that was still
a fun read. We wanted intense
action, gritty characters,
and a storyline that combined
realistic elements with
horror. I guess, you can
say we were inspired by
such filmmakers as John
Carpenter (Escape from New
York), Kathryn Bigelow (Near
Dark), and Richard Matheson
(The Night Stalker -- not
the remake, the original
1972). |
|
| Is
Horror or Sci-Fi your main
creative interest? |
| Sci-fi
and horror are definitely
our genres. Though, we did
write a drama script that
placed in The Waterfront
Film Festival. |
|
| Can
you describe a typical day
in the process of creating
your film or screenplay? |
| Working
in a team of three writers
(especially sisters), there
can be arguments. For this
script it was both an interesting
and difficult challenge
because we each developed
three radically different
characters and had to come
up with a way for them to
blend into one story. |
|
| Who
do you consider to be the
greatest horror writer? |
| It's
a tie between Rod Serling
and John Carpenter. Both
men have left their marks
on the horror/sci-fi genre,
Serling for his famous plot
twists and Carpenter for
his memorable characters. |
|
| Can
you recall the first horror
film that left a lasting
impression on you? |
| The
swashbuckling horror film
Night Creature, with Peter
Cushing and Oliver Reed.
This film was produced when
Hammer was trying to bring
in a new hybrid genre known
as "adventure horror."
Though Cushing did some
impressive fight scenes
in Evil of Frankenstein
and Brides of Dracula, we
will never forget him in
Night Creature. |
|
| Who
do you consider to be the
greatest 'Masters of Horror'? |
| John
Carpenter, Dario Argento,
and Clive Barker. |
|
| Do
you currently have any attachments
and/or a cast wishlist for
your screenplay? |
| We
wrote the screenplay with
Michael Easton or Johnny
Depp in mind for the lead. |
|
| Who
do you see directing your
screenplay and why? |
| We
would LOVE to see either
Tim Burton or Kathryn Bigelow
direct our script. Both
filmmakers have a unique
directing technique that
breathes life into fictional
settings. Burton and Bigelow
also possess a talent for
handling characters that
do not fit into the specific
mold of "hero"
or "villain." |
|
| How
many edits has your screenplay
gone through? |
| This
was our third draft of Midnight
Prayers. The first draft
was a second place winner
in The Acclaim Film and
Television Competition,
while the second draft placed
in the top ten percent of
The Austin Film Festival's
Heart of Film Screenplay
Competition. |
|
Was
this your first screenplay?
If so, are you inspired
to write another? |
| This
was not our first screenplay,
but it is our favorite.
We tried to do something
different by having a realistic
storyline running parallel
to a supernatural/horror
storyline. |
