Q&A with Jacob Cooney
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
Between conception and completion, The Frolic took about a year to finish.
Where did your inspiration come from?
The Frolic is based on a short story of the same name, written by horror writer Thomas Ligotti.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
I love all genres, but horror and sci-fi have been a major interest of mine since I was a child. It all started when I watched my first classic Universal Pictures horror film with my parents when I was around 5 or 6 years old.
Can you describe a typical day in the creative process?
We shot The Frolic over a six day period. A basic day during production usually called for a late afternoon call time, which then took us shooting late into the night and early morning hours. For the most part, the schedule was filled to the brim with the pages that needed to be done that day, so the cast and crew would hunker down, work hard, and have some fun.
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
Thomas Ligotti, of course.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
Thinking back, I would have to say Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." But most recently, I would say "The Descent" from Neil Marshall. That film quite honestly gave me the chills..
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Master of Horror'?
John Carpenter.
How did you find your cast?
The cast of The Frolic came together relatively easily. Maury Sterling (John Doe) is a really good friend of mine, so I basically handed him the script and said "Here, you're doing this." I knew he was perfect for the role. Michael Rielly Burke (Dr. Munck) is a friend of Maury Sterling. He was introduced to me as "the guy who was Ted Bundy." We met once for coffee and talked about the movie. Shortly after, he agreed to come on the film to play Dr. David Munck. Jennifer Aspen (Leslie Munck) was a friend of the films producer, Jane Kelly Kosek, and someone I had grown up watching on TV shows like "Party of Five". Jennifer read the script and immediately sparked to it. On our first phone meeting, she basically told me she was "going to play Leslie Munck and I had no choice in the matter." This happened to agree with me, as I had wanted to work with her for a long time.
What is you most memorable moment while making your film?
The most memorable moment for me would have to be sitting in front of the monitor on the first day of shooting and seeing Dr. Munck and John Doe sitting across from each other for the first time.
What was the editing process like for The Frolic?
We went through numerous cuts of the film until we felt that the tension and timing were perfect..
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
We shot The Frolic on Super 16mm film.
How many members of your cast and crew?
Six in the cast, with a crew of seventeen.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
Oh man... I am just excited to work with any actor, but if I had to name some I would have to say Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Jean Reno and Natalie Portman.
