Q&A with Guillaume Tunzini
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
Four months.
Where did your inspiration come from?
From the photographer of my wedding who said that he saw once the groom say "I don't", and from my neighbor in a hospital room who was amazingly annoying.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
Horror... and comedy.
Can you describe a typical day in the creative process?
Since most will talk about the shooting, I'll talk about the prep. FATHERS IN LAW is an action movie set in one hospital room. My 2 protagonist are stuck in bed, but they want to kill each other. The big challenge was to make the shots interesting although everything happened in the same place. We worked for days with Julio Ribeyro, my DP, trying to find interesting camera angles around this room. During those days, you could see 2 grown up guys walking around a table with 2 Ken-dolls on it, looking for angles. This is how we got the 60 different camera angles in that small room, and that's how, with the help of very talented cast, we told the story right..
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writers?
Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Lovecraft... and more.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
The Exorcist.
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Masters of Horror'?
Takashi Shimizu, Stanley Kubrick, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Sam Raimi... among others.
How did you find your cast?
Actor Jacques Boudet and I have the same agent and that's how I met him. And I met Michel Vivier after a normal casting/audition process.
What is you most memorable moment while making your film?
The bursting effect ( you'll see what I mean when you see the movie ) was quite a biggie.
I also remember Jacques Boudet's last take, when he was covered with plaster and blood and that he had to be on stage for the Cesar ( French Oscars) one hour later.
Also, having to paint the whole 4000 Sq Ft studio floor all by myself right after wrap. That is a painful memory.
Can you briefly describe the editing process?
I did a first cut, made one test preview, arranged a few minor things and went to neg-cut.
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
We shot on film - 35mm.
How many members of your cast and crew?
Seven in the cast, with a crew of twenty.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
Evangeline Lilly, Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams, Christian Bale, Ashton Kutcher, Giovani Ribisi, Wentworth Miller.
