Q&A with Anthony Falcon
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
Over all I'd say it took almost a year and a half. It was time consuming for a few reasons. First off I created the idea while working on another project. So once I created the idea this incredible film came out called Saw 2. Now 99 Pieces originally was not what it is now. However after Saw 2 got released about a bunch of guys who get locked in a house I had to get more creative and make the story a lot smarter so that took a lot of time.

Film prepping was a good 3 months of buying equipment, finding a cast and actors and the film itself was shot over a 3 month period. Main reason was the story is told over 40 days and 40 nights. So we shot almost every day forty days in a row so the hair growth and weight loss would be realistic. Then the editing was the rest of the time.
Where did your inspiration come from?
Well I was insipred by old horror films of the late 70's and 80's. Wes Craven, John Carpenter, all the old school ones where blood shed happened but you spent almost half of the movie learning about people so you cared when they died. That's what I tried to do with "99" make people care and relate to the characters.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
Horror and Thrillers. Probably primarily thrillers.
Can you describe a typical day in the creative process?
Wow. Right now my typical day sucks because I do everything but one day that will change. Just Kidding. In the type of indy stuff I do it takes a toll on you. But what I do is not really work with a crew so I do it all myself. I usually find the location, call the location to confirm. Call every single actor I have to confirm. Double check that I have all my equipment, all my extra scripts incase cast forgot them, my sound stuff, lighting, mics, monitors, grip equipment, camera equipment. Check for all my props get to set. I have my actors, me and one other guy who helps out with the camera. Than I set up everything. I usually act in everything so once it's set up I than hop in front of the camera. Rehearse with my actors. Go man the camera, check my sound levels get my light meter out, record. Go act. And do that for an entire day. Than break down all my equipment. Load it up. Thank my actors and get ready for another day tommorow.
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
Probably Wes Craven. And I mean the old Wes Craven, not the new one. Another one whose not really horror but definitly has his thriller moments in Christopher Nolan of Memento. Huge insipration in the art of storytelling.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
Probably Last House on the Left. A very real look at a horror situation which scared the crap out of me. Wes Craven was a genius.
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Master of Horror'?
Definitly Craven. The guy sometimes falls off the edge with films like Cursed but over the years. Def Craven.
How did you find your cast?
I got luck on this one. Actually I did another indy film called "This Hollow Sacrament" as an actor. And I met a lot of great people on set. I told them all, hey I'm doing a low budge indy when this is done. No money, but a fun script.
What is you most memorable moment while making your film?
Putting my cat in the oven. Long story. Another one was there is a scene in the movie where I get dropped into a window from outside. We had the windows barred up so dropping me in viciously yet carefully didn't work out so well. My foot caught a bar, yanked it out of the wall and dropped onto my forehead leaving a tiny scar. Tiny yet memorable.
Can you describe your editing process?
I edited the film myself. After a rough cut I watched it by myself. I than went back and made a few changes. After that I had a screening in my home town. I had question/answer sheets for everyone. So based on the audience response I also went back, cut a few scenes and added a few scenes.
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
Digital. Canon XL-2
How many members of your cast and crew?
20 castmembers, 3 people in the crew.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
Edward Norton or Christian Bale. Both of those guys are geniuses.
