The movies at this year's
Shriekfest included many fantastic
offerings! As you can
see from the comments to the right
below, some movies created quite
a buzz.
OF
NOTE :
: :
: :
: Monster
: : :
A charming short
from Australia. Filmed in B&W
it was masterfully directed
by Jennifer Kent and sweetly
(gee - can we say that about
a horror flick??) told the story
of a single mom protecting her
son from the "monster in
the closet."
: :
: Rusty
Forkblade : : :
Humor definitely
played a part in several of
today's screenings but, was
most talked about, relative
to this short, shown in the
first screening program, featuring
Skynyrd music and Vikings (???)
... Yep!
: :
: A Terrorist
Ate My Brain : : :
This short captured
a lot of attention today for
it's satyre. As one commenter
put it, "a truly sharp
and demented view of our iPod
and fear-obsessed culture."
:
: : Bad
Reputation
: : :
As
you watched this feature
length film, you were torn
between looking away in
horror (date rape and escalating
rage) and laughing at the
campy (how many woodies
did we see?) teen-film humor.
It was definitely a roller
coaster ride worth
taking. Of
particular note was the
well written dialogue. The
director, actors and even
the director's parents,
showed up in force for this
screening making it a memorable
Shriekfest 2006 moment.

Dreadful (Brandes) :
: :
Can you overcome
a fear? When has fear gone so
far it is no longer healthy?
And can a director really keep
an audience entertained for
92 minutes, telling the tale
of a girl trapped in a car in
the woods while being stalked
and tormented by a derranged
hitchhiker? ... YES!!! The thought
and detail of this film clearly
marked it as masterful in its
execution. As a bonus, the Director
(Richard Brandes) and his cast
(including Mimi Rogers) and
crew very generously answered
questions for more than an hour
in the Q&A which followed.
Answers, in particular, given
by Cinematographer Joplin Wu
served as fantastic insight
for anyone considering filming
in Digital DI format.

SHRIEK BACK!
You told us what you thought of
the movies... |
|
|
Night
of the Leben Tod
The make-up FX
were awesome. Hats off to Tom
Devlin.
|
|
|
My
Ambition
Very good acting
by the lead (young man). Unlikely
the zoo keeper would todd the
books into the bat exhibit,
however. I would have liked
Dracula to say something a the
end.
|

Daniel P. |
|
Penny
Dreadful (Brandes)
Hyper scary,
good acting, it had a budget,
should be popular!
|
| -
John S. |
|
All
is Normal
A slow, creep
build. Great use of tension.
Says a lot in a minimalist way
that really enhances the mystery.
|
| -
Clea F. |
|
All
is Normal
Liked the music.
|

Deborah R. |
|
Monster
Excellent film.
Top-notch production value.
Very convincing & moving
performances by the mother and
young son. The director has
a strong command of the horror
genre.

All

Night

I love horr flicks
and this one was coooooool!

Monster
Excellent across
the board! Production, design,
direction and cinematography
... etc. A+

Night
of the Leben Tod
It was scary,
funny, gory, cool. Yes it was!
|
| -
Cesar G. |
|
Deadly
Tantrum
Silly & fun &
really well made.
|
| -
Esther G. |
|
|
Rusty
Forkblade
Great mainstream potential.
And I mean that in a good way. I can
see Tim Allen doing this as a feature
comedy.
|
| -
Larry W. |
|
Skewed
Good concept. Good
performances. Would make a good feature
thriller if main character was more
sympathetic and vulnerable.

A
Terrorist Ate My Brain
A Terrorist Ate My
Brain was a lot of fun. Great Zombie
effects, make-up, and some surprisingly
smart humor about our IPod American
Idol addicted society. Any film that
ends with Osama Bin Laden in a giant
fireball has got to be good.
|
| -
Will L. |
|
Penny
Dreadful
For a movie shot in
a woods filled area - the drama came
more from what I didn't know than
from what I did. There are still things
that go bump in the night that still
scare us all.
|
| -
Alivia H. |
|
The
Marionette
Very creepy. Loved
the directing. Acting was amazing
and the script was well written.
|
| -
Larissa O. |
|
Rusty
Forkblade
So funny, great production
value for an independent short film.
I would have liked to have seen more
Vikings with beards though, and music
that was more Skynard than Elton John-ish
hard rock.

Bad
Reputation
My first movie screening
was fun. Funny moments were great.
Everyone seemed to get them. The "rape"
scene was difficult to watch. I didn't
know how to react. For me, the idea
of the event is enough to get the
point.
|
| |
|
Horrors
of War
Terrible. Too much
war footage, corny, why make it. Could
have been done in 10 min.

A
Terrorist Ate My Brain
The film was an effective,
funny combination of gory horror and
social satire – a truly sharp and
demented view of our iPod and fear-obsessed
culture.

Excellent! Not normally
a horror fan but loved the humor and
appreciated the campy gore!

Terrorist Ate My Brain
Great concept. Solid
Execution of idea. Very good performances.
Excellent use of humor on several
levels. Over-the-top blood & gore
was cool. Very glad film was screened
and the opportunity to see it was
enjoyable.

Great movie, I liked
the fact that they had some comic
stuff in it as well.
