Q&A with Clea Frost
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
Three years!.
Where did your inspiration come from?
I'd recently moved to L.A. and was living in a big apartment building where I had a window onto my neighbors' lives.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
I'm probably most interested in Supernatural Thriller/Horror stories but I also love Sci-Fi. The combination of Sci-Fi and Horror can make for some really exciting stories.
Can you describe a typical day in the process of creating your film or screenplay?
Every day is different but each is very long and filled with unexpected challenges. Actors get another gig, locations fall through at the last moment, technical problems arise - so you're constantly putting out fires. One day we turned up at a restaurant that had been all locked in to discover that the manager had just received a call saying we couldn't shoot there after all. If we'd arrived 30 minutes earlier, we could have gotten the shot.
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
Probably Stephen King in terms of the appeal of his work and the volume of really interesting ideas.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
The Evil Dead - saw it when I was a teenager and it gave me the creeps for a long time.
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Masters of Horror'?
Of course there's Sam Raimi, George Romero, Dario Argento. And although he's worked in many genres, Roman Polanski's horror films - Repulsion, The Tenant, Rosemary's Baby - are some of my favoritesc.
How many participants comprised your crew?
No one was paid so I had to call in a lot of favors. That meant the crew varied in size from 8 for some scenes to just the DP and myself depending on what we were shooting.
How many castmembers?
Just three leads and three extras.
How did you find your cast?
I networked with friends.
Did you re-edit after your first satisfactory cut?
Absolutely. I've been trimming it on and off for the past 2 years.
Film or digital?.
Digital - we used two different cameras, Betacam and DV Cam.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
Christopher Eccleston, Ralph Fiennes, Sigourney Weaver.
