Dark Romance Review
On a running-time to budget ratio, Microgravity is one of the best funded films at Shriekfest 2006, and it shows. Director David Sanders and his team do a marvelous job of bringing this multi-layered story of bravery, existential fear, nightmares and betrayal to life in a very convincing way.

The sights and sounds of life in a space capsule are captured to every detail, including some very clever weightless effects.

Alone on a cramped Russian space ship orbiting the moon in an indeterminate future, a young female cosmonaut confronts the ultimate loneliness and the ultimate fear while steadfastly maintaining her commitment to duty.

Added to the fearsome bleakness of the vacuum of space is the terror of visions that could not be real.

The admonition of Alien's tag line that "in space no one can hear you scream" was never so true as in "Microgravity."

Q&A with David Sanders and Seth Talley
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
It took forever! Conception was when David was an undergrad in 1998. Filming was in 2003. Post was done end of 2005. Premiere was 2006. Sucks when you have to work for a living.
Where did your inspiration come from?
The Leonov scenes from 2010, Yoshiaki Kawajiri's anime short "Running Man" and the Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 feet.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
Totally Sci Fi. We're Rivetheads, not Batcavers. ;-)
Can you describe a typical day in the process of creating your film?
There were no typical days - writing, shooting, editing and laying sound are totally different experiences. The common thread would be long hours, hard work and tedious focus on the task at hand.
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
Gotta be Edgar Allen Poe.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
Definitely Alien. Although the first movie to give Seth nightmares was E.T.
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Master of Horror'?
John Carpenter. End of Discussion.
How many participants comprised your crew?
We had a real crew. About 30 people at various stages of production.
How many castmembers?
Two.
How did you find your cast?
We ran an ad in Backstage West that said we were looking for a "young female Kosmonaut and someone to make her laugh" or some such. I think we got about fifty replies for each.
Did you re-edit your film after the first cut?
Are you serious? We went through two or three cuts between fine and final! We've lost count of how many before that.
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
35mm. Digital is for poseurs. Although we might do an HD short in the fall because digital is also for people who can't afford the exhorbitant costs associated with 35mm.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
Anybody good and underappreciated. David has long had his eye on Matthew Lillard. Chris Pratt's work on "Everwood" really impressed Seth, who has wanted to "rediscover" Patrick Dempsey for years... but Grey's Anatomy beat him to it. Drat!
