Q&A with Jason Roer
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
Ten months.
Where did your inspiration come from?
I went to art school at F.I.T. in Manhattan so I was pretty much inspired by what I was surrounded with in school. I created a character who I wanted to make instantly lovable so when the crushing moment of revelation comes - it sweeps in unexpectedly. I had to look no further than a few acquaintances from the past!
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
I love all genres and tend to combine elements to form sub-genres whenever possible.
Can you describe a typical day in the process of creating your film?
I walk through Central Park or down by Riverside Park nearly every day with my pad out. I love writing as I'm moving about - so I've had to develop some pretty attuned peripheral vision! Those darn cabbies just won't stop for anyone!
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
H.P. Lovecraft.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
HALLOWEEN - to this day I have yet to see a better example of inspirational fodder. I would give a close second to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. What Carpenter and Romero were able to do with their pocket change budgets is simply amazing and proves all out - you simply do not need a lot of green to tell an amazing story. God bless them both - they've had a special place in my heart for as long as I can remember.
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Masters of Horror'?
Carpenter and Romero - Wes Craven is also up there in my book. He simply churns out consistently incredible work and I can't believe he hasn't worn out that brain of his.
How many participants comprised your crew?
18
How many castmembers?
6
How did you find your cast?
Hal Robinson has worked for me before and he is just an angel of a man. He's a fantastic actor who happens to know quite a few other actors from his plethora of years of experience. He led me to PJ Sosko, Lori Gardner, and Judith Roberts (Judith was in Eraserhead - so I couldn't believe it when she said yes! Oh how far she's fallen - From David Lynch to a Jason Roer film! Oh well- I'm sure she'll get back on track soon!) As far as Lisa and Brenda - I found them both online on some of the N.Y. Castings pages. They came in and won my heart pretty quickly - the both of them.
Did you re-edit your film after the first cut?
I had written a scene that I decided not to shoot. And of course, it's now the final scene of the film! After the rough cut and some test screenings, we decided that scene was in fact neccessary and so we went out for another half day and got the footage. And you know, what? It's one of the best damn scenes in the film! After 35 drafts of the screenplay (yes - I said 35 drafts!) you'd think we would have figured it all out, but once you get the film back, you never know what might be needed to give it a little extra sauce.
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
We shot with the DVX 100A from Panasonic. It's an amzing little camera and really gives a great iimage if you know how to exploit it. Lucky for us - Michael (our amazing DP) knows the ins and outs of the camera and gave us more than we could have ever expected. If you need a DP - go find this man - his talent is displayed all over this film and the many others he's shot.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
I would love to work with Johnny Depp. I think his range is simply prolific and his screen presence is spectacular. I'll watch anything he is in because he always finds ways to surprise me with his choices and that is the mark of a stellar actor.
