Dark Romance Review |
|
"Penny
dreadful" was the term
applied to the pulp fiction
of the Victorian Era, when
a new chapter of a serialized
story could be purchased
for a penny.
Though Richard Brandes'
film has all the classic
components of classic, lurid,
pulp storytelling (night
terrors, surreal situations,
a damsel in distress) the
film's title also equally
applies to it's heroine
Penny, full of dread.
The situation of picking
up the wrong hitchhiker
has been a staple of horror
films over the years, and
Brandes makes great use
of the possibilities, introducing
his deadly threat in a way
guaranteed to inspire chills.
The intimate cast of Rachel
Miner as the terrorized
Penny and Mimi Rogers as
her well-meaning therapist
do excellent work in their
respective roles, with Rogers
particularly unforgettable
in a rare display of minimalist
acting. |

|
| How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion? |
| One and a half years. |
|
| Where did your inspiration come from? |
| As a director I'm inspired by such masters as Alfred Hitchcock, Sergio Leone, Akira Kurosawa, Sam Peckinpah, and Stanley Kubrick, as well as current directors like Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, David Lynch, and David Cronenberg. |
|
| Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest? |
| I've always loved both genres. I also really love edgy thrillers like "History of Violence."
|
|
| Can you describe a typical day in the process of creating your film? |
| Our days were anything but typical. We were shooting from dusk till dawn in 18 degree temperatures! We survived a sand storm with winds in excess of 65 MPH, as well as a snow storm that dumped a couple inches of snow on us on one of our most demanding nights schedule wise. |
|
| Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer? |
| Stephen King comes to mind naturally. |
|
|
| Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you? |
| "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" They screened it for us at summer camp at night and I remember being afraid to walk back through the dark woods to my cabin! I think I was about 6 or 7 years old at the time. |
|
| Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Masters of Horror'? |
| Kubrick for "The Shining", Hitchcock for "Psycho", John Carpenter for the original "Halloween" which really launched the modern day horror film franchise. There's some great stuff coming out of Japan these days too from directors like Takashi Shimizu and Hideo Nakata. |
|
| How many participants comprised your crew? |
| 30 |
|
| How many castmembers? |
| 9 |
|
| How did you find your cast? |
| Casting Director Aaron Griffith. |
|
| Did you re-edit your film after the first cut? |
| Yes |
|
| Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras? |
| We shot on Super 35MM. |
|
| If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be? |
| Tough question because there's so many whose work I admire. Jack Nicholson, Jeff Bridges, Johnny Depp, Monica Bellucci, Meryl Streep, Viggo Mortensen, Billy Bob Thornton, Susan Sarandan, Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, Angelina Jolie, Naomi Watts, Ray Liotta, Benicio Del Toro, Ian McShane, Frances McDormand, Mos Def, James Woods, Powers Boothe, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Annette Benning, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Giamatti, Russell Crowe, Julianne Moore, Forrest Whitaker, Frances Fisher, Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, Glenn Close, Samuel L. Macy, Robert Downey, Jr. Jon Voight, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin Spacey, Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kathy Bates, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Newman. |
