Dark Romance Review
Jim Hemphill's homage to trashy 1970's high school sexploitation and teen revenge films borrows a big dose of contemporary teen comedy to lighten the impact of several disturbing scenes portraying date-rape, sadistic humiliation and violent death.

It's the kind of mixed bag that leaves audiences wondering how to react, but the talents of a young cast combined with well written dialogue go a long way toward making the film continually engaging.

Angelique Hennessy as Michelle, the shy but quirky/sexy target of persecution is quite good at changing like a chameleon from one personna to another. She creates a memorable, sympathetic character who unfortunately falls victim to her own obsession for revenge and to the lurid necessities of the pulp-fiction genre she exists in. Bad Reputation is a great 70's style B-movie.

Q&A with Jim Hemphill
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
I started writing the screenplay three years ago, and we're going to be fine-tuning the final product right up until the Shriekfest screening.
Where did your inspiration come from?
I wanted to emulate the great directors who worked for Roger Corman's New World Pictures in the 1970's: people like Jonathan Demme, George Armitage, and Barbara Peeters, who made smart and stylish genre films with limited resources.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
I love all forms of cinema without prejudice - I'm as happy watching a Taiwanese art film as I am checking out SWAMP THING. But as a filmmaker I'm undeniably drawn to horror as a genre, though I would love to make a teen musical someday too.
Can you describe a typical day in the process of creating your film?
A typical shooting day would begin with my cinematographer Forrest and I planning out our shots, then adapting that plan to whatever the actors come up with. Of course, independent film shoots are so crazy there's really no such thing as a "typical" day.
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
Can I have two? I really worship both Stephen King and Peter Straub.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
No question, it was HALLOWEEN, which I still think is a masterpiece. I've seen it over forty times and I always find something new in it.
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Masters of Horror'?
There are so many, but certainly David Cronenberg, John Carpenter and Wes Craven form a sort of holy trinity of horror for me. I also love Argento, Polanski, Hitchcock, Romero, and many, many others. And my very favorite director in any genre is DePalma.
How many participants comprised your crew?
We had a very small crew - often it was just me, my cinematographer, and my producer doubling as sound person. On extremely luxurious days we had a couple people to help with craft services and equipment.
How many castmembers?
Around a dozen speaking parts.
How did you find your cast?
I found almost everybody by placing an ad in Backstage West.
Did you re-edit your film after the first cut?
Dear God, yes. I'm still tinkering with it as we speak.
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
DV
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
That's a great question. There are tons, but I suppose my dream cast would include Jeff Bridges, Maria Bello, Brian Cox, Kurt Russell and Meryl Streep.
