Q&A with Susan Bell
How long did your project take to create, from conception to final completion?
The Boarder was an advanced directing project for my MFA degree at Florida State University Film School. Writing took place over 4 weeks of classes, maybe a couple of days of prep between other classes. Under strict school production guidelines, shooting comprised of 3 12-hour days, while post included 6 days of editing and 6 more days of sound design/mixing. My DP and I traveled to Miami to supervise a digital intermediate session that resulted in the original Super 16mm film gaining a beautiful 35mm print.
Where did your inspiration come from?
I always wanted to make a film with the feel of Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes," which was the basis for the early 80's Disney film of the same name. I'd come up with the idea of collecting souls in Mason jars about a year before production and everything led outward from that image.
Is Horror or Sci-Fi your primary creative interest?
Definitely horror and thriller stories, especially the supernatural. I've done 3 shorts in the genre and am working on a feature.
Can you describe a typical day in the process of creating your film?
There is no typical day. I'm usually juggling all kinds of projects plus now working full time as an assistant to 2 film/tv producers.
Who do you consider to be the greatest horror writer?
Stephen King for horror. I love Asimov's sci-fi work. I'm also interested in late 1800's and early 1900's gothic literature.
Can you recall the first horror film that left a lasting impression on you?
Poltergeist, especially since my sister's name is Carol Ann!
Who do you consider to be the greatest 'Masters of Horror'?
Hitchcock. Dario Argento. John Carpenter. And Spielberg did a great job with Jaws.
How many participants comprised your crew?
25, inlcuding editorial/VFX crew.
How many castmembers?
Only three.
How did you find your cast?
They were local actors from the Tallahassee community. The boy who plays Charlie was a young Truman in The Truman Show.
Did you re-edit your film after the first cut?
At FSU's film school, the director is not allowed to cut their own film. My editor did his cut, then I came in and directed two more cuts, which were reviewed by classmates.
Did you shoot on film or with digital cameras?
The Boarder was shot on Kodak Super 16mm film with an Arri SRIII camera package.
If you could choose any famous actors to work with on future projects, who would they be?
I admire Rachel Weisz - she would be a great heroine! Also, Cate Blanchett, Carrie-Ann Moss... Yikes -- there are tons of men I'd love to work with: Orlando Bloom, Heath Ledger, Jeremy Irons....gosh this list could get very long.
