| How
long did your project take
to create, from conception
to final completion? |
| "Old
Friends" was made in a hurry.
I conceived the film about
three weeks before shooting,
we wrote it up to the last
minute, did the casting
at night after work in the
two weeks leading up to
the shoot, and filmed the
whole thing on the last
weekend of November, 2005. |
|
| Where
did your inspiration come
from? |
| I
fantasize about the end
of the world all the time,
and practically already
am the survivalist main
character. I also had to
consider the easiest locations
and available props when
I thunk up the story. |
|
| Is
Horror or Sci-Fi your primary
creative interest? |
| Speculative/horror/science
fiction are my primary interests,
but I read and try to be
creative beyond these sectors,
including general history
and humor. |
|
| Can
you describe a typical day
in the process of creating
your film? |
| Except
for the shoot days, each
day started by coming home
from work at 8 or so each
night, then getting to work.
In other words, 3/4 of the
challenge is keeping up
the energy to be creative
despite the demands of making
a living. |
|
| Who
do you consider to be the
greatest horror writer? |
| David
Lindsay, author of "The
Haunted Woman" and "Voyage
to Arcturus" is a big favorite.
And of course Poe, Lovecraft,
Algernon Blackwood... too
many to list, I think. Patricia
Highsmith? |
|
|
| Can
you recall the first horror
film that left a lasting
impression on you? |
| I
had to sleep at the foot
of my parents' bed the night
my little brother & I snuck
into "Jaws" at the cineplex. |
|
| Who
do you consider to be the
greatest 'Masters of Horror'? |
| Argento,
Tobe Hooper (for the original
Texas Chainsaw Massacre),
James Whale |
|
| How
many participants comprised
your crew? |
| About
10 (they came and went throughout
the day). |
|
| How
many castmembers? |
| Five |
|
| How
did you find your cast? |
| Online
actor listings. Total strangers,
and they were fabulous. |
|
| Did
you re-edit your film after
the first cut? |
| The
first cut is always an assembly
to see just what I've got,
so I definitely re-edited
afterward. |
|
| Did
you shoot on film or with
digital cameras? |
| Digital
video (note that you've
left out the possible option
of analog video, which is
still favored by a few maniacs
out there). |
|
| If
you could choose any famous
actors to work with on future
projects, who would they
be? |
| Klaus
Kinski, even doing Ray Harryhausen
animatronics with his rotting
corpse... For horror I like
faces that already look
tormented, makes the director's
job that much easier. |
