American utilities were turning to natural gas due to oppositions in their plans to build coal-burning power plants. This risk which experts feared a boom in gas demand for electricity generation will send prices higher.

However on the other side of the globe, China's surging growth is forcing up the price of another major energy source: COAL.

China had been a net exporter of coal, but in mid-2007 it imported coal for the first time. China's coal demand is likely to continue to increase by more than 5% annually, perhaps more, in the immediate years ahead. US Coal suppliers have benefited from the run-up after several years of decline.

Coal would remain the low-cost energy substitute as oil prices surged over $120 per barrel.

A solid company but the high P/E makes me list this as a short term investment.

Arch Coal, Inc. engages in the production and sale of steam and metallurgical coal from surface and underground mines to power plants, steel mills, and industrial facilities in the United States. At December 31, 2007, the company operated 18 active mines; and owned or controlled approximately 2.9 billion tons of proven and probable recoverable reserves.

Coal has no where to go but up, a large majority of electricity is generated via coal and the emerging market's demand keeps increasing.
