The
elite six string musicians of
heavy metal and blues rock are
known as guitar gods. The brilliant
and charismatic musicians of Apocalyptica
have firmly established themselves
as rock gods of the cello.
Perttu Kivilaakso,
one of three classically trained
cellists who comprise Apocalyptica,
graduated from the world renowned
Sibelius Academy in his homeland
of Finland.
Originally, Perttu and his bandmates
Eicca, Paavo and Max performed
only on rare occasions, and were
known within a very small circle
for their covers of songs by Metallica.
In a short time their renown and
their ambitions grew. Their first
formal concert date was shared
by another then-unknown band from
Finland making their debut, H.I.M.
With each successive recording,
the band has included more and
more original compositions along
with their trademark instrumental
covers of rock songs by the likes
of Sepultura, Faith No More and
Pantera.
Perttu has a passion for opera,
often adding obscure classical
recordings to his CD collection,
despite his passion for Slayer
and Rammstein.
In live performance is where the
musicians of Apocalyptica truly
ignite, playing with a mixture
of frenzy and finesse. Perttu
in particular takes command, stripped
down and exciting the audience
from the edge of the stage. |
