The
bacchante
were
the
priestesses
of Bacchus,
the
god
of wine
and
intoxication.
In ancient
Greece,
his
female
worshippers
were
called
Maenads
and
were
said
to engage
in strange
rituals
and
depraved
behaviour.
The
bacchante
here
holds
a thyrsus,
a fennel
staff
topped
by a
pine
cone,
representing
sex
and
fertility.
