Images of Winter: The Ice Maiden
The Ice Maiden by Edmund Dulac
'Everything about her was white, glistening and shining; so shining that the human eye could hardly bear the radiance. Her long white hair hung about her; a circle of glow-worms surrounded her forehead ... On either side marched one of the great bears like two guardians.'

The Ice Maiden by Edmund Dulac was painted in watercolor and gouache in 1915. It was one of six illustrations to "The Dreamer of Dreams" by Queen Marie of Romania. Edmund Dulac was a French-born artist who made his home and career in England, faithful to his adopted country through two world wars and until his death in 1953.
