Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest
Michael Redgrave with Dame Edith Evans as Lady Bracknell from a 1952 film of "Earnest"

Oscar Wilde had already achieved great success as a playwright when he wrote his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest. In it, Wilde displays his gifts of wit, satire and cleverness. The "Earnest" of the story's title is an invented name and personna of Jack Worthing. As Earnest, Jack lives a double life, allowing himself a lifestyle free of responsibilities. When as Earnest he falls in love with the daughter of the arrogant Lady Bracknell, the results of his deceptions become more complex in a classic comedy of errors..
