Jack o' Lantern
scary Jack Pumpkin King
Modern takes on old legend: a Halloween pumpkin and Jack Skellington as Pumpkin King

Ghostly, floating lights in the dark of night have frightened and mystified man through all of recorded history. They exist, sometimes scientifically explained but oftentimes not.
The legend of Jack o' Lantern is one tale that was invented long ago to explain one such glowing apparition.
Jack was a greedy, clever man, who feared that when his time came to face the Great Beyond, the Devil might claim his soul and trap him in Hell for all eternity. So Jack devised a plan to trap the Devil and demand a promise.

In return for releasing the Devil, Jack received old Beelzebub's word that when his time came to die, he would never pass through the gates of Hell.

Unfortunately, when Jack died, he found the Gates of Heaven closed to him too. The Devil kept his word and barred him from Hell. As a parting shot of mockery, the Devil threw a burning ember from Hell's fire at the departing Jack, who placed it in a lantern made from a hollowed out turnip to light his way as his spirit wandered eternally without a home.
