for releasing
the Devil,
Jack received
old Beelzebub's
word that
when his time
came to die,
he would never
pass through
the gates
of Hell.
Unfortunately,
when Jack
died, he found
the Gates
of Heaven
closed to
him too. The
Devil kept
his word and
barred him
from Hell.
As a parting
shot of mockery,
the Devil
threw a burning
ember from
Hell's fire
at the departing
Jack, who
placed it
in a lantern
made from
a hollowed
out turnip
to light his
way as his
spirit wandered
eternally
without a
home.
