The tentacle faced
visage of Davy Jones
in Pirates of the
Caribbean: Dead
Man's Chest was
certainly familiar
to all those acquainted
with the ancient
horrors that H.
P. Lovecraft imagined.
The best known of
Lovecraft's horrific
Old Ones is Cthulhu
(pronounced k' too-loo).
In the Cthulhu Mythos,
created by Lovecraft
and subsequent writers,
the creature is
described as one
of a race of alien
beings who once
ruled the Earth
as gods. Cthulhu
now sleeps beneath
the sea in the ruined
city of R'lyeh awaiting
an awakening to
reclaim a rule of
terror.

The Outer Gods of
the Mythos reside
in the void of space,
with the greatest
of them being Azathoth,
whose will is carried
out on the Earth
in the present by
Nyarlathotep, the
Crawling Chaos.
Nyarlathotep is
capable of appearing
in human form, who
nevertheless is
able to inspire
awe bordering on
madness. In fact,
the ultimate fulfilment
of prophecy regarding
Nyarlathotep is
his reign of existential
terror over the
entire world.
