Echoes of Mortality: Illusory Skulls in Modern Art
Dali by Halsman, All is Vanity by Gilbert, Skull Poster for The Descent, L'Amour de Pierrot

Creative directors at Lionsgate Films drew inspiration from the work of the Latvian-born photographer Philippe Halsman when they recalled the death's head imagery of his portrait of the famed surrealist, "Salvador Dali, in Voluptate Mors."

The artistic precedent of merging visions of seductive beauty with the haunting spectre of death dated back to the Victorian Age, most memorably with the work "All Is Vanity" by Allan C. Gilbert. The drawing "L'Amour de Pierrot" depicts another variation on this theme, and was published on a French postcard in 1905.
