The Death of the Grave-digger by Carlos Schwabe (1877-1927)

The Swiss-German Symbolist's painting of the Angel of Death shows her graceful wing sweeping down, like the scythe of the Grim Reaper, even as it seems to gently embrace her victim. The model for the Angel was the artist's wife. In addition to his paintings, Carlos Schwabe is also known as an illustrator of many books of Symbolist poetry, including The Flowers of Evil by Charles Baudelaire.
