Brides of Blood and the films of Eddie Romero

phillipine horror John Ashley Blood Island
Heartthrob John Ashley and Scream Queen Beverly Hills find the 'horror' of Blood Island

The steamy jungles of the Phillipines were the location for a series of wildly successful horror and sexploitation films by director Eddie Romero in the late 60's and early 70's.

Romero's Blood Island series always followed a proven formula. An American played by heartthrob John Ashley comes to Blood Island to investigate reports of mysterious happenings. He encounters sexually perverse island natives, an ugly (often comically grotesque) mutant, and a busty American love interest.

In Brides of Blood, Ashley comes ashore with an elderly scientist and his nympho wife (played by starlet Beverly Hills). He soon encounters a mutant beast who demands female sacrifices. His search for the origins of the creature leads through man-eating plant infested jungles to a mad doctor's lab, which includes midget servants scurrying about.

Eddie Romero went on to direct the 'girls in prison' B-movie "Black Mama, White Mama," written by Jonathan Demme, starring Pam Grier and Sid Haig.
