Gates of Delerium: The Metal Masterworks of Albert Paley

Albert Paley was born in 1944 and earned his college degrees at the Tyler School of Art of Temple University, in his hometown of Philadelphia.

His career as an artist began as a goldsmith, designing fine jewelry, but his creative muse was changed forever when he won a commision to design a pair of gates for the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Instiution in 1974.

Paley's creations over the last 30 years have included at least 40 exquisitely wrought gates and a multitude of pieces that include lamps, tables and fine art sculptures.

The artist is the recipient of many prestigious honoraria, including the Smithsonian's Masters of the Medium award.

Albert Paley's studio is a huge, 20,000 square foot workplace that has been equipped with a bridge-crane for lifting his massive creations. His largest sculpture to date is a new installation at the St Louis Zoo that weighs over 200 tons and stands 36 feet high.

Our opening image is a photograph of the portal gates of the Renwick Gallery at The National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. The gates stand seven and a half feet tall and are fashioned from steel, brass, bronze and copper.

Albert Paley's gates have been publically and privately commisioned, and include the gates to the San Francisco Courthouse Rotunda, as well as private wine cellars and gardens.
