When the artists
at McFarlane toys
were unable to obtain
rights for a line
of Hellraiser figures
from Disney, the
unlikely guardians
of the Cenobites,
they went one step
better and asked
Clive Barker himself
to create an entirely
new group of demonic
characters who came
to be called the
Tortured Souls.
Barker created a
mythology for the
Souls' realm and
supplied a backstory
for every character
which accompanies
each toy.
When combined, the
stories form a novella
which centers around
the sadistic demon
Agonistes, who creates
new monstrosities
of the damned, "cutting,
infibulating, searing,
cauterizing, stretching,
twisting, reconfiguring"
his victims.
Lucidique begins her
story as a human seeking
revenge upon her father's
killer through the
skills of the torturous
demon, but when she
herself is mortally
wounded by her enemies,
she calls forth Agonistes
to turn her into a
creature of vengeance.
A second collection,
Tortured Souls 2:
The Fallen was later
created by McFarlane,
without an accompanying
novella.
Lucidique,
Clive Barker's Erotic
Demon
'Tortured Souls:Animae
Damnatiae', the
movie based on the
original novella
and directed by
Clive Barker himself
has been in various
stages of production
for several years,
and is currently
expected to be released
sometime in 2007.
