Dark City

One year before the release of The Matrix, Alex Proyas created his own dark world set within an alternate reality: the world of Dark City.

Proyas had already proven himself as a master filmmaker as the acclaimed director of The Crow, overcoming his grief at the death of Brandon Lee (with the support of Brandon's family), completing the classic gothic action film.

Proyas wrote and directed Dark City, a tale that includes suspense, murder, dark fantasy and surreal visions.

As the story unfolds, John Murdoch awakens in an old hotel with no memory of his identity or his previous life. He discovers that he is the suspect in a series of murders.

While evading capture, in a quest to explain the mystery of his new life, he discovers The Strangers, a frightening, hidden society that can stop time and manipulate reality.

Murdoch's final confrontation with The Strangers leads to a shocking and beautiful ending.

Dark City features a brilliant cast including Jennifer Connelly, John Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and Rufus Sewell as Murdoch. Sewell is best known for his roles in A Knight's Tale and Dangerous Beauty.

The visual style of Alex Proyas recalls the work of other great artists such as Edward Gorey, Fritz Lang and the film noir directors of the 1950's.

The Strangers were an obvious influence in the creation of The Gentlemen from 'Hush,' one of the most chilling episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
