The Southern Gothic Beauty of Azure Ray

Azure Ray would never call themselves purely a gothic band, but every gothic heart will appreciate their beautiful, ghostly whispering voices, their pleasingly sorrowful melodies and their often wicked lyrics.

Azure Ray is the songwriting team of Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor, who have been creating music together since meeting in art school at the age of 15. Orenda and Maria's music is built on elegant backgrounds of guitars and piano, building ever more layered arrangements with organ, mellotron, violins, tape loops and percussion. Their moods often evoke the slow, gentle flow of a crystalline river, or the misty cascade of a slow motion waterfall.

Their most recent CD, Hold On Love is their most addictive and most ambitious. From that album, the lyrics to the haunting song The Devil's Feet convey Azure Ray's gothic sense of mystery

The girls can also be heard on a collaboration with Moby on the song 'Great Escape.' A beautiful solo album by Orenda, called Invisible Ones was released in 2005.

Lyrics from 'The Devil's Feet' by Azure Ray
When I was a child a story was told / About the devil and a girl oh so bold / He offered her riches, a fortune of gold / And lovers abound / But she lifted her soul / She lifted her soul clean oh clean / And like the story was told, on a dark country road / The same man appeared to me / But I reached, I reached, through the rain to the devil's feet
