When Opeth recorded
the melodic and
lyrical music on
their CD Damnation,
the most rabidly
zealous scandinavian
followers of death
metal were incensed
to the edge of violence,
but a devoted and
ever growing multitude
of fans and critics
were enthralled.
Beautifully sung
vocals alternate
with traditional
death metal growls
as melancholy and
rage wax and wane,
interwoven with
extraordinary musicianship
and arrangements.
The guitars of Mikael
Åkerfeldt
and Peter Lindgren
display a range
of subtlety and
savagry, crafting
a darkly soundscaped
world. Mellotron
string effects add
to Opeth's majestic,
orchestral sound.
A DVD entitled Lamentations
offers the experience
of seeing the band
perform live.
Following the success
of the CDs Deliverance
(2002) and Damnation
(2003) has come
Opeth's latest album,
Ghost Reveries.
