The Death of the Minotaur
Theseus Killing the Minotaur by W. Russell Flint
W. Russell Flint - Theseus Killing the Minotaur (watercolor - 1910)
King Minos of Crete once prayed for a bull to emerge from the sea to be sacrificed to the god Poseidon, but when his entreaty was fulfilled by the appearance of a pure white animal, he resolved to keep it and sacrifice another in its place. In his anger, Poseidon caused Minos' queen to fall in love with the white bull, and their copulation produced the Minotaur. The offspring was imprisoned in the Labyrinth and was given young men and woman to slake its bloodlust. After many years, Theseus, who was the progeny of the god Poseidon and a mortal woman, determined to end the terror of the Minotaur and slew him with the help of Ariadne, King Minos' daughter.
