Lord Frederic Leighton's most sensual painting depicts the fatal seduction of a fisherman by a deadly siren. As a boy living for a time in Germany, Leighton became familiar with the writing of Goethe, one of whose poems inspired this work. The mythical sirens were a favorite subject of Victorian painters.
