The Death of Lady Jane Grey

Lady Jane Grey, though still a young woman at the time of her death, was one of the most intelligent and educated in all of England.

She reigned as the uncrowned Queen of England for a mere nine days before she was deposed by an army loyal to Mary, daughter of Henry VIII.

Lady Jane, who claimed her own right to the throne, had been proclaimed Queen by the Duke of Northumberland, advisor to the dead King Edward.

Mary was a devout Catholic, and was opposed by wealthy Protestant nobles.

A rebellion of the Protestants gave Mary her opportunity to accuse her rival of treason. Though she had no part in the planning of the revolt, Jane's father had joined in the rebellion to restore her to the throne. He was hung for his role.

Lady Jane Grey was put to the axe in the Tower of London at the age of 16. She refused to convert to Catholicism and faced her death with dignity.
