Franz von Stuck
is known as one
of the most influential
painters of his
time, a master of
German symbolist
art, which bore
similarities to
that of the Pre-Raphaelites.
It influenced the
schools of Expressionism
and Surrealism in
later years.
.Symbolist inspirations
in both art and
literature often
invoked dark romanticism,
with the written
influence issuing
from the works of
Poe and finding
expression in Baudelaire's
poetry The Flowers
of Evil.
Symbolism aimed
to define spiritual
concepts through
metaphorical and
often dark imagery.
Von Stuck's 'Sin'
embodied its theme
in the depiction
of Lilith embraced
by the tempting
serpent.
Also shown here
are details from
Von Stuck's paintings
of Salome, Judith,
and The Kiss of
the Sphinx.
Like many fine painters,
Stuck began as a
graphic artist,
but achieved immediate
acclaim with his
first exhibition.
His villa is now
used as a museum.
The artist's tomb
is in Munich, Germany,
where he died in
1928.
