The
photograph
which graces
the cover
of Joy Division's
second and
final album
'Closer'
was taken
at the Cimitero
Monumentale
di Staglieno
in Genoa,
Italy. This
breathtaking
'necropoli'
was first
opened in
1851 and
grew to
its current
size, which
includes
an English
cemetery
in which
the wife
of Oscar
Wilde is
interred.
The cemetery
has been
the object
of praise
by visiting
writers
including
Ernest Hemingway
and Mark
Twain who
have fallen
under the
spell of
the hundreds
of sensually
carved figures
who have
come to
be known
as the 'talking
statues'
for their
lifelike
realism.
