The bizarre
nightmare of Santa
Sangre is more than
simply a horror
film. It truly is
an art film that
follows in the dark,
horrific, surrealist
tradition of Luis
Buñuel, with
hints of Tod Browning
(Freaks), Federico
Fellini (Satyricon)
and Dario Argento
(Susperia).
Indeed, the film
was produced by
the brother of Dario,
Claudio Argento.
Alejandro Jodorowsky,
the film's director,
presents the story
of Fenix, a boy
who witnesses a
scene of vengeful,
gruesome violence
acted out by his
parents, thereafter
living an Oedipal
torment in a world
of religious fanatics
and circus freaks.
Marilyn Manson drew
inspiration from
some of Santa Sangre's
most unforgettable
scenes in the conception
of his videos for
'Coma White' and
'The Man That You
Fear.'
